We are relocating to Brussels, Belgium

Hi Everyone

We will be relocating to Brussels, Belgium this coming summer.

The news about the new posting was received differently by each member of our family:

My husband is very happy as it is a promotion and a very interesting and challenging work. Our eldest is graduating high school this year and is not very happy about the upcoming posting. He is planning to join us but as he does not speak French we will need to search for universities in English. Our middle son is excited. He loves living in different countries, and our youngest is not sure if it's good or bad.

I am pleased we found out about our move at the end of December. This will give us plenty of time to prepare.

First thing we need to do is to prepare a moving list and to register our 2 youngest to an English school in Brussels - grade 10 and grade 8.

Then, we will start gathering information about life in Brussels. This is where the expats blogs are a great help and an amazing resource for valuable information.

There were no expats blogs when we relocated to Venezuela in 1996, and there were hardly any when we moved to Canada in 2002. But now it is 2010 and everyday new expats blogs are being created, so I will be reading lots of blogs about life in Brussels in the upcoming weeks.

If you are an expat living in Brussels I would love to hear about your experience. You can comment on this blog post, or you can write about your experience in here.

If you are an expat living anywhere around the world you are welcome to share your stories about life in your host country, and you can also assist other expats who are planning a relocation to your host country by filling out our questionnaire..

  1. How do you feel about the move, Sharon? I see you have taken the typical woman/trailing spouse position of being concerned about everyone else, but make no mention of yourself :) How will this move impact your life? Do you have any particular plans for your new life in Belgium? I do hope all goes well, 2010 will certainly be an exciting year for you.

  2. Hi Judy

Yup you are right I am always concerned about everyone else ....

I am excited about the move and at the same time have a little stomch ache. I think it is just like being pregnant for the third time - You are excited about the new baby but still worries and pray that everything goes well :)

As regards to my plans - I can always work at our embassy, but for now I plan to concentrate on growing my three websites and exploring Brussels.

Thanks for your greeting and have a great new year

    Sharon

We moved to Overijse, Belgium in July of 2008. I highly recommend ISB as a great school.
    Good luck!

  5. Hi Sharon, I've been an expat in Belgium for five years now and although the weather could be better (quite rainy and dark this time of year) Brussels is an excellent city to be an expat. Because there are so many International companies and government organisations there is a strong network of expats here and lots of information to be had. On the downside, Belgians love paperwork so be prepared for some red-tape. I have an expat website you can feel free to check out (http://cheeseweb.eu) and please don't hesitate to email me if I can answer any questions for you.

  6. Hi Alison

Thanks for the tips about Belgium.

We are now mostly gathering information and learning as much as we can about life in Brussels.

I would love to know a little French and to be able to speak with the locals. I am taking some lessons and hopefuly will master the language while we relocate to Brussels.

Love your website and the new look :) and thanks for offering your assistance
